Searching the Knox County Registry
The primary search tool is iCrimeWatch Indiana. It is free. No login is required. You can search by a person's name, by zip code, or by drawing a radius on the map to see all registrants in a given area.
Each result includes the registrant's photo, full legal name and aliases, date of birth, current home and work address, the offense that required registration, conviction date, and tier level. Records update as soon as the sheriff's office enters changes into the system.
If you need to check records across state lines, visit NSOPW.gov. That federal site searches all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories in a single query. It is especially useful for checking the background of someone who moved here from another state.
The Indiana Department of Correction oversees the statewide registry system and sets policy for how counties like Knox manage registration.
Who Must Register in Knox County
Indiana Code 11-8-8 (Zachary's Law) defines who must register. The list includes people convicted of rape, child molesting, sexual misconduct with a minor, exploitation of a child, and a range of other qualifying offenses. Violent offenses against children also trigger registration requirements in Indiana.
Out-of-state offenders who move to Knox County must register within 72 hours of arriving in Indiana. They do not get extra time just because their conviction happened elsewhere. Indiana maps out-of-state offenses to the nearest equivalent Indiana crime for tier assignment.
People required to register while attending Vincennes University must register the campus address in addition to their home address. Both addresses appear in the public registry.
Registration Requirements Under Zachary's Law
Zachary's Law has been in effect since January 1, 2003. It requires registrants to keep their information current at all times. Any change to a home address, employer, school enrollment, vehicle, or other registered detail must be reported within 72 hours.
Failing to register on time, or providing false information, is a Level 6 felony. A second violation is a Level 5 felony. These are real criminal charges with real prison time. The law treats registration violations seriously because the registry only works if it is accurate.
Annual verification is standard for most Knox County registrants. Sexually violent predators must verify every 90 days. In-person appearance at the Knox County Sheriff's Office is required for each verification.
Registry Listings: What You See
Every Knox County listing shows a current photo, the registrant's legal name and aliases, date of birth, current addresses (home and work or school if applicable), the offense and conviction year, and the tier or SVP designation.
Some registrants appear as "transient." That means no fixed address. Transient offenders still must register and verify on a schedule. They report regularly to the sheriff's office and the record reflects that status.
The registry does not display private details like financial records, Social Security numbers, or case notes. The public record shows what you need to identify a person and know where they are living.
Residency Restrictions
Registered sex offenders in Knox County cannot live within 1,000 feet of a school, public park, youth program center, or similar facility. The restriction applies to the entire county, including rural areas and unincorporated parts of Knox County.
Vincennes and other municipalities may have their own rules. Some cities add buffer zones or restrict certain types of housing. Call the Knox County Sheriff's Office or a local attorney to confirm whether a specific address is allowed under both state and local rules.
The sheriff's office conducts periodic compliance checks. Deputies visit addresses on file to confirm registrants live where they say they do. Violations lead to arrest and criminal charges.
