Who Must Register in LaPorte County
Indiana Code IC 11-8-8-4.5 defines the offenses that require registration. The list includes rape, child molesting, child exploitation, sexual misconduct with a minor, voyeurism involving minors, and criminal deviate conduct. Convictions from other states, federal courts, and military courts that match Indiana's definitions also require registration. Some violent offenders who are not classified as sex offenders may also be required to register in the same system.
Registration lasts 10 years for most offenders. Persons classified as sexually violent predators and those with victims under age 12 must register for life. The Indiana Department of Correction oversees SVP classification. The IDOC sex offender registry page has more detail on how classifications are assigned and what each level means for an offender's ongoing obligations.
Zachary's Law and LaPorte County
Indiana's registry law -- IC 11-8-8 -- is known as Zachary's Law. It took effect January 1, 2003. The law was named for Zachary Snider, a child from Cloverdale, Indiana, who was killed by a registered sex offender. The law created a unified statewide registry and required all 92 counties to maintain and share data through a central system. LaPorte County joined this system at launch.
Under IC 36-2-13-5.5, the LaPorte County Sheriff is legally required to maintain the registry and make it free and public. The Indiana Sheriffs' Association coordinates the statewide system and provides the OffenderWatch platform used by all county offices. The national registry at NSOPW.gov pulls from the same data and allows searches across state lines.
Residency Restrictions in LaPorte County
Indiana law bars persons classified as "offenders against children" from living within 1,000 feet of a school, public park, or youth program center. They also cannot live within one mile of any victim's home address. These restrictions apply in La Porte, Michigan City, and every township and unincorporated area of LaPorte County. A violation of these residency rules is a separate Level 6 felony charge.
LaPorte County has a mix of urban areas along Lake Michigan and more rural inland areas.
