Registration Requirements in Marion County

Indiana Code IC 11-8-8-7 sets a strict 72-hour deadline. Anyone with a qualifying sex offense conviction must register within 72 hours of release from prison, a move to a new address, or arrival in Indiana from another state. Marion County has a large number of annual registrations due to its population size and the volume of people released from the Adult Detention Center each year.

At registration, the person must give their full legal name and all known aliases, date of birth, home address, work address, school name if they are enrolled, all vehicle information, and every email address and social media account. The sheriff's office takes a photo at each in-person visit. This data goes into the statewide OffenderWatch system. In a county as large as Marion, keeping registrations current is an ongoing effort for the sheriff's office.

Most registrants verify their information once per year. Sexually violent predators must appear every 90 days. Under IC 11-8-8-17, missing a verification visit is a Level 6 felony -- up to 2.5 years and a fine up to $10,000. A second offense is a Level 5 felony. Homeless registrants must check in with the Marion County Sheriff every seven days.

Note: Anyone who works in Indianapolis or anywhere in Marion County but lives in a different county must register their work address with the Marion County Sheriff within 72 hours of starting employment.

Who Must Register in Marion County

Indiana Code IC 11-8-8-4.5 defines which offenses require registration. These include rape, child molesting, child exploitation, sexual misconduct with a minor, criminal deviate conduct, and voyeurism involving minors. Some violent offenders without sex offense convictions may be required to register in the same statewide system.

Registration lasts 10 years for most people. Sexually violent predators and those with victims under age 12 register for life. The Indiana Department of Correction assigns SVP classifications. Zachary's Law in Marion County

Indiana's sex offender registry is governed by IC 11-8-8, called Zachary's Law after Zachary Snider, a child from Cloverdale killed by a registered sex offender. Marion County, as the state's largest county by population, has one of the highest numbers of registered offenders in Indiana.

Under IC 36-2-13-5.5, the Marion County Sheriff must maintain the registry and keep it public at no charge. The Indiana Sheriffs' Association runs the statewide OffenderWatch system. Marion County registrants also appear in the national registry at NSOPW.gov, which is searchable from any state.
