Grant County Sex Offender Registry Laws
Indiana's registry is based on IC 11-8-8, known as Zachary's Law. The law went into effect January 1, 2003. It was named after Zachary Snider, a child from Cloverdale, Indiana, who was killed by a registered sex offender. The law requires all 92 Indiana county sheriffs to maintain a public sex offender registry and make data freely available online.
The offenses that require registration are defined in IC 11-8-8-4.5. These include rape, child molesting, child exploitation, possession of child pornography, criminal deviate conduct, sexual misconduct with a minor, and voyeurism involving minors. Qualifying out-of-state convictions and certain violent crimes also require registration.
The 72-hour registration window is set by IC 11-8-8-7. Failing to register or missing a verification appointment is a Level 6 felony. A second offense is a Level 5 felony, which carries one to six years in prison. County sheriffs must keep the registry publicly available under IC 36-2-13-5.5.
Grant County Registration Periods and Verification
Most registered sex offenders in Grant County must stay on the registry for 10 years from the end of their sentence, including probation or parole. After 10 years without new violations or criminal charges, the person may petition a court for removal. The court reviews the petition based on the full criminal record and current risk level.
Sexually violent predators and those convicted of crimes against victims under age 12 must register for life. SVPs verify their registration every 90 days rather than annually. All other registrants check in once per year. Each verification requires an in-person visit to the Grant County Sheriff's Office at 214 E 4th Street in Marion, where the registrant confirms current information and has a new photo taken. Contact Sex Offender Registry Coordinator Matthew Ogden at 765-662-9864 ext. 4214 to schedule appointments.
All changes in address, employment, vehicle, or online accounts must be reported within 72 hours. Offenders who move out of Grant County must notify the county sheriff and register with the new jurisdiction within the same window. Failing to report a change is a separate criminal offense under Indiana law.
